Flying Geese Units.

Step 3

For the flying geese units (the large triangle with two small triangles that border the snowball unit.) we will use a method that makes 4 at a time. There are many different directions on how to make flying geese. There are also many specialty rulers to help make flying geese. I've found this method to work and I don't need a special ruler ( although I have a few of them)

1. You will need the 3 – 7 ¼ inch squares from fabric C , these will make the “geese “and the 12- 3 7/8 inch squares from Fabric D, these small squares will be the “sky”
   
   
   
   
   
2. Draw a line diagonally on each small square and then draw a line ¼ inch from that line on both sides of the 1^st line. The center line will be cutting line the two on the sides stitching lines. If you have or borrow one of the specialty rulers/tools that I have you will only have to draw the two side lines, something like this quarter inch ruler  Or if your machine has a ¼ inch foot that you can use you only have to draw the
   center line and use it as a guide. I do the two lines.
3. Once all your lines are drawn take one large square and two little ones. Place the smaller squares in oppiste corners on the large squares. Right sides together, edges even, the lines you drew lining up to run diagonally on the big square.
4. 
   Sew on your stitching lines, you will have two lines of stitching, in the center you will be sewing through both little squares where they over lap.
   
5. Cut on the cutting line or between the 2 lines of stitches. Open the sections pressing the seam allowance toward the sky or small triangles of fabric D, your background fabric. 
    
    
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
6. Take the one of the sections you just created and one of the small squares, place it in the corner of the large triangle, again right sides together, the edges lined up and the lines running down from the corner. 
   
   
   
7. Sew along the stitching lines. Again you will have two lines of stitching. Cut between the lines of stitches. Press open towards the small sky triangle. 
   
   
   
8. Do the same thing with 2^nd section you created and you have 4 flying geese units
   
   
   
9. Repeat with the remaining 2 large squares and the 8 small squares.
10. Now you have to trim them to 3 ½ by 6 ½ make sure you have a ¼ inch between the top of the unit and the point of the triangle.
